Product Compliance Before Importing: A Practical Checklist

Identify destination-market rules, responsible parties, testing, certificates, labels, traceability, and customs filings before approving production.

A supplier saying a product is 'certified' is not a compliance plan. Requirements depend on the exact product, intended use, user group, materials, claims, destination, and sales channel. Identify the responsible business and applicable rules before approving a sample or packaging.

Map the product and market

Create a compliance profile for each SKU and variant. A change in age grading, voltage, wireless function, chemical composition, food contact, medical claim, or destination can change the rules.

  • Intended and foreseeable use, target user, and product claims.
  • Materials, components, power source, radio functions, and substances.
  • Destination countries and any state, provincial, or channel requirements.
  • Importer, manufacturer, brand owner, and other legally responsible parties.

Control evidence

Determine required standards, tests, technical files, certificates, registrations, labels, warnings, instructions, and traceability. Verify laboratory scope and match reports to the exact product and production configuration.

  • Use current reports with model, photos, bill of materials, and standards clearly identified.
  • Confirm who must issue or hold each certificate.
  • Plan required electronic customs or regulator filings before shipment.
  • Require written approval before material, component, factory, or design changes.

Keep compliance in the quality plan

Compliance is not finished when a first sample passes. Incoming materials, production tests, lot traceability, document retention, complaint handling, corrective action, and recall readiness may all matter.

  • Use qualified legal, laboratory, customs, and regulatory professionals for the target product and market.
  • Do not rely on this general guide as legal or regulatory advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a supplier's existing test report?

Only if it is authentic, current enough for the applicable requirement, covers the exact product and configuration, uses the correct standard, and satisfies the responsible party's legal obligations. Have a qualified professional review it.
