Incoterms 2020 Explained for Buyers

Understand what Incoterms rules allocate, what they do not cover, and why the named place matters when comparing EXW, FCA, FOB, CIF, DAP, and DDP quotes.

Incoterms rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce allocate delivery tasks, costs, and transfer of risk between seller and buyer. They do not replace a sales contract and do not decide product ownership, payment timing, quality, warranty, or every consequence of delay.

Always include the rule, exact place, and edition

A useful quotation says, for example, 'FCA [named terminal or address], Incoterms 2020.' The named place is essential because it identifies where delivery or cost responsibility changes. A term without a place is incomplete.

  • EXW places limited obligations on the seller and can leave the buyer handling origin tasks it may not be positioned to perform.
  • FCA can be used for any mode and is often practical for containerized or multimodal shipments.
  • FOB, CFR, and CIF are sea and inland-waterway rules, not generic terms for every shipment.
  • DAP and DDP bring goods toward the destination, but unloading and import responsibilities differ by rule.

Cost and risk do not always move together

Under some C-terms, the seller pays main carriage while risk transfers earlier at origin. Buyers should identify the delivery point, insurance responsibility, and claims process instead of assuming that the party paying freight carries all risk.

Choose the term with your logistics partners

The best rule depends on the shipment, transport mode, customs capability, supplier experience, destination rules, and negotiating position. Ask a freight forwarder, customs broker, and legal adviser to review material transactions.

  • Compare quotes on the same rule and named place.
  • Confirm who books transport, completes export and import clearance, buys insurance, unloads, and pays local charges.
  • Write any responsibility not addressed by the rule into the sales contract.

Frequently asked questions

Which Incoterm is best for a buyer?

There is no universal best rule. The buyer should choose one that matches its customs and freight capability, gives cost visibility, and works for the transport mode and named locations.

Does DDP include every possible charge?

DDP assigns broad seller responsibility, but the contract and quote still need to identify the destination, unloading, excluded fees, tax treatment, and whether the seller can legally act as importer where required.
